The Chance Encounter

Eugene's Hidden Tea Room

LifeTechEmacsArcology

Ichi-go Ichi-e (一期一会) is a Japanese cultural idiom expressing the unrepeatable nature of each moment of experience. The saying could be translated as "One Chance, One Encounter", a reminder that each moment is precious and irreplaceable. The Chance Encounter cultivates spaces where this realization becomes second nature to host and guest. By bringing one-of-a-kind teas to Eugene's one-of-a-kind public spaces, one-of-a-kind moments can come naturally.

Baisao The Old Tea Seller , a Zen monk turned tea seller who helped establish sencha tea by wandering the streets of 17th century Kyoto selling it, writes:

Set up shop this time
on the banks of the Kamo
customers, sitting idly
forget host and guest
they drink a cup of tea
their long sleep ends
awakened, they realize
they’re the same as before.

Unique Tea Experiences

The Chance Encounter offers a one-of-a-kind tea service experience hosted by Ryan Rix in Eugene and greater Lane County, Oregon. Guests can experience an intimate Japanese sencha ceremony in some of Lane County's most tranquil spaces.

I seek out some of Japan's most distinct and wonderful green teas. Guests will have the choice between nearly-caffeine-free roasted green teas, unique and fascinating senchas, and the sorts of high-quality shaded teas which would once be offered to emperors.

I seek out some of Eugene's most quiet and scenic locations, places where I can bring a full tea service and seating to a shaded meadow or a scenic bluff, and you meet me at one of these for tea.

We sit in a quiet place where I'll brew the tea and guide your taste buds to the path of the sages.

If you'd like to arrange a private tea session, email chance-encounter@rix.si and we'll organize a time and a place to meet up and share some lovely tea with you and up to three friends.

Easily enjoy rare Japanese green teas at home

All of the tea I serve will be available for local delivery along with a limited selection of appropriate teaware.

Brewing loose-leaf sencha tea is not like brewing bagged tea or even loose-leaf teas from other regions. The Chance Encounter will gladly provide brewing and water guidance resources.
